Common Questions About Infused Flower Potency
It is a mass balance. Total cannabinoid mass divided by total batch mass gives the finished potency. Flower contributes its mass multiplied by its potency. Every concentrate you add contributes the same way, at its effective potency after any terpene cut. Add the contributions, divide by the combined weight of everything in the drum, and that is the number. Infusion does not raise potency by itself. The result always lands between the potency of the flower and the potency of what you added.
Concentrate needed equals flower mass multiplied by the gap between your target and the flower potency, divided by the gap between the concentrate's effective potency and your target. Using the calculator's defaults: 4 lb of 22% flower, distillate testing 92% with a 3% terpene cut, target 45%. That returns 943 g of concentrate, or 2.08 lb, for a finished batch of 2,757 g at 45.00%.
It changes the basis, not the cannabinoid count. THCa sheds a carboxyl group when heated and becomes THC, and THC is the lighter molecule. Multiply THCa by 0.877 to get THC. Raw flower, kief, hash, and THCa isolate report THCa. A decarbed distillate reports THC. Convert everything to one basis before running the balance. Running a THCa flower figure against a THC oil figure overstates the result.
A terpene cut dilutes the concentrate, so it lowers effective potency and raises the mass you need to hit the same target. Two conventions are in use and they do not return the same number. As a share of the final terped blend, effective potency is the lab number multiplied by one minus the cut. As a share added to the distillate's own weight, it is the lab number divided by one plus the cut. At 92% lab with a 3% cut the two land at 89.24% and 89.32%. At a 10% cut they land at 82.80% and 83.64%. Match the convention your supplier uses.
No. The relationship is not linear and it steepens fast. At 4 lb of 22% flower at 89.24% effective potency, a 30% target needs 245 g of concentrate, a 45% target needs 943 g, and a 60% target needs 2,358 g. Raising the target from 30% to 45% nearly quadruples the concentrate required. The ceiling is the effective potency of the concentrate itself. As the target approaches it the required mass climbs without limit, and above it there is no solution at any volume.
